Children just beginning school in La Mosquitia were leaving after only a year or two, largely because they weren’t making the transition to learning in Spanish. To remedy that, teachers wrote stories for a primer that would introduce children to reading, beginning in their own Miskito language. The stories needed illustrations that children could identify with, so I visited parts of the Mosquitia where those stories would take place, and consulted with the lead teacher about details of the images. I also worked with a young Miskito artist, who contributed several illustrations.
